What’s the Kindest Thing Someone Has Ever Done for You?
I have been thinking about this question, and I don’t think I can name just one thing.
After many years of life, I have learned that kindness doesn’t always arrive as one extraordinary gesture. Sometimes it arrives quietly. Sometimes it comes from the people closest to us – and sometimes, unexpectedly, from complete strangers.
Kindness
Some of the greatest kindness I have ever experienced came during the darkest time of my life, after we lost our 18-year-old son to senseless violence.
There were strangers who chose to care about what had happened to him and to us.
People helped us search for answers and investigate circumstances surrounding his death.
Others publicly questioned why the police weren’t doing more. They didn’t know our son. They didn’t know our family.
But they cared enough to stand beside us.
I will never forget that.
And then there were the quieter acts of kindness.
Neighbours appeared at our door carrying dinner because, in the middle of grief, food had almost ceased to exist in our everyday lives. Someone else took care of something practical without asking what we needed. People simply stepped into the empty spaces that we were no longer capable of filling ourselves.
Those things may sound small.
They weren’t.
When your whole world has collapsed, a meal placed in your hands can feel like someone is holding a tiny piece of your life together for you.
Perhaps that is why my understanding of kindness has changed over the years.
I don’t necessarily need someone to fix things for me. Some things cannot be fixed.
Sometimes the kindest thing another human being can do is simply see me.
To sit beside me without demanding anything. To listen without needing to give advice. To allow me to be exactly where I am, without trying to change the moment or make it more comfortable for themselves.
I have experienced that kind of kindness many times throughout my life – from family, friends, neighbours and complete strangers.
So I cannot tell you the single kindest thing anyone has ever done for me.
But I can tell you what kindness has come to mean to me:
It is when another human being sees that you are struggling, reaches out a hand and quietly says, through words or actions:
“You don’t have to carry all of this alone.”
And sometimes, the people who do that are the ones you least expected. ❤️
